Let me tell you a story of someone I know in Lagos called Tunde.
In the bustling city of Lagos, Nigeria, where the streets are always crowded and the markets are always bustling, there lived a man named Tunde. Tunde was a hardworking man, but like many others in Nigeria, he was struggling to make ends meet. The cost of living was rising every day, and Tunde found himself unable to afford basic necessities like eggs and vegetables.
One day, Tunde was scrolling through his social media feed, filled with posts from people complaining about the high prices of goods and blaming the government for their struggles. Tunde felt a surge of anger and frustration as he read these posts. “If only the government could do something about this,” he thought to himself, “life would be so much easier.”
But as Tunde sat there seething with anger, a small voice in the back of his mind reminded him of something his grandfather used to say: “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” Tunde closed his social media app and went outside to clear his mind. As he walked through the streets of Lagos, he saw people selling goods and produce on every corner. Suddenly, an idea struck him like a bolt of lightning.
That evening, Tunde went to the market and bought two hens and a sack of corn. He set up a small coop in his backyard and began taking care of the hens, feeding them corn and water every day. Before long, the hens started laying eggs, and Tunde had a steady supply of fresh eggs for himself and his family.
As the days went by, Tunde’s hens multiplied, and he found himself with more eggs than he could possibly eat. He decided to take the excess eggs to the market and sell them, making a small profit in the process. Tunde was amazed at how a simple solution had turned his crisis into an opportunity.
Inspired by his success with the hens, Tunde decided to take things a step further. He cleared a small patch of land in his backyard and began planting vegetables like tomatoes, peppers, and okra. With a little bit of care and attention, the vegetables grew quickly, and soon Tunde had a bountiful harvest on his hands.
Tunde’s neighbors were amazed at his ingenuity and resourcefulness. They had been complaining about the high prices of vegetables in the market, but Tunde had found a way to grow his own. They came to him seeking advice on how to start their own backyard gardens, and Tunde was more than happy to help.
As word spread about Tunde’s successful ventures, more and more people in the neighborhood followed suit. Soon, the streets of Lagos were filled with backyard gardens and small coops, as people took control of their own food supply and found ways to thrive in the face of adversity.
Tunde realized that he didn’t need to rely on the government or external sources for his basic needs. By taking matters into his own hands and being resourceful, he had found a way to not only survive but thrive in difficult times. He had turned his crisis into an opportunity, and in doing so, had become a beacon of hope and inspiration for those around him.
So, the next time you find yourself struggling to afford basic necessities, remember Tunde’s story. Instead of blaming the government or waiting for a solution to come from elsewhere, take control of your own destiny. Plant a garden, raise some hens, and watch as your problems transform into possibilities. Don’t just survive – thrive! And remember, it’s not about attributing blame, but contributing to the solution.
